It was in response to a question:

"Q Dana, going back to Virginia Tech, what more does this White House think needs to be done as it relates to gun issues? The President says current laws need to be strengthened, anything beyond that -- you had a conference on school violence with guns -- what more needs to be done?

MS. PERINO: I would point you back to the fact that President, along with Secretary Spellings, hosted last October -- October 10, 2006 -- a conference on school gun violence after the Amish school shooting and the other shootings that had happened, because the tragedies are the ones that just collectively break America's heart and are ones that we deeply feel, because all of us can imagine what it would be like to have been at your own school, your own college, and to have something happen. And those of us who are parents, or brothers or sisters of people at the schools have to take that into consideration.

As far as policy, the President believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed. And certainly bringing a gun into a school dormitory and shooting -- I don't want to say numbers because I know that they're still trying to figure out many people were wounded and possibly killed, but obviously that would be against the law and something that someone should be held accountable for. Has video of press conference. Question and statement starts at: 4 min 48 seconds.

Article19, I agree with josh on this... you want to start another rant about how "mean" and "dumb" those of us who recognize our rights are then either email me, or start another note.

If you're going to toss the bullshit "because the smart folks" line from your liberal playbook then you aren't worth it at all.

That out of the way, I have to say VERY well put dook! I turn on the TV and not 8 hours after the violent murder of 32 young adults and teachers there's an hour long "as it happens" expose on ABC by some blowhard media "expert" with "all the solutions".

It's a wonder the American public still allow these people air time.

I'm late to the conversation, but just want to add my deepest condolences for everyone personally involved with this horrific incident.

I think this thread is complete. I don't want it to break down into bickering. Let's start a new note for further discussion, please?

There has been plenty brought up here.

Gun Control
Presidential Response
Notification of Students

And plenty of other food for thought.

To echo what Joshawesome said,

"But if I'm going to criticize Bush for his actions and remarks today, I'm also going to criticize everyone here for it. There's a time and a place for arguments, and this isn't it. If you want to have an argument about gun control, start a new note, or at least, don't hijack a note whose purpose was to give condolences to the members of the VT community."

For anyone who may be interested:

A live video stream of today's Convocation at 2 p.m. will be available at hokiesports.com.

You never hear how guns have protected law abiding citizens....about 2.5 million times per year. But you won't hear that in the 'drive-by media', doesn't fit their template......
