So I just found out our dishwasher is dead. That means we get to go out this weekend and drop a few hundred dollars on a new one.
Some things should free. Like dishwashers.
Among the other things we shouldn't have to pay for:
*Toilet paper (yeah, you know I'm right)
*Tires
*Paper towels
*Trash bags (we throw them away!)
*Light bulbs
What about you? What items do you hate spending money on, even though they are necessary?

Dishwashers are a luxury. I don't have one. Haven't for almost three years.

SHOES!
LOL....
Nah, nothings ever free so even if you were sent your monthly supply of TP and Trash Bags you'd still have to pay for them in the form of taxes.
It WOULD be nice though.

Ugh had to shell out to repair the washing machine earlier this year. I know it's necessary, but it always feels like I'm throwing money away.

I agree with you there carmodyarc... I LOVE the new iPhoto but it's TOTALLY crippled unless I shell out $100 a year to publish a GALLERY... COME ON!

You'll be glad to know that I am now making it my life's work to make iPhoto publish to something other than .Mac. I have to move to Colorado next week, but as soon as I'm settled I am going to make that little SOB bend to my will... you'll see.

When you make something free, you lower its worth. If there's one thing in this world that we should not devalue, it is love.
I'd make personal hygiene products free. Then we'd all be clean and smelling good.

Unless that is you free it from the value system that attributes a price to it in the first place.

I am not going to hijack the thread to have this discussion, so my final comment be this: love doesn't have a "price" attached to it. Like respect, it is earned and then cherished by the select few that you choose to open your heart to. It's impossible to give your love to everyone, but even if we could, how would we ever know who we really loved, who we wanted to spend our time, energy, and lives with?

If you live anywhere with an economy, good luck.
I agree with Erin... make something free and it loses its worth. Just look college. Of my years in college the only ones I actually put effort into were the ones coming out of my pocket book.
It was far to easy to look past the worth of my education when all I had to do was wake up in the morning.

when I said taxes it was a direct response to
Getting more specific. Car taxes and house taxes. What the heck. I already bought them, why do I have to keep paying for them?

I think whatever a society truely values should be free or almost free, and yes, I know my taxes will pay for it. I want every graduating high schooler to get two free years of community college. Every semester it is determined if the two year college is continued. I would also make it contingent upon a contract to give a specific amount of time to volunteer work (like 6 months) within the state the college was located.

You know, I don't mind paying for things, it's the TIME it takes to deal with it all that offends me. TIME, to wait on someone to fix the dishwasher, or time to go out shopping for a new one and wait for delivery. The time to go register the car, the time to grocery shop, etc. etc. It all takes TIME!!! I could be quilting, or coding, or whatever else I wanted to be doing besides spending time on mundane things. :)

Okay, I thought of something.
Plug-ins.
I am creating an inDesign template that's pretty word-count restrictive. I know that you can check counts by selecting text and viewing the Info palette, but I wanted something quicker. So, after a quick search, I found TextCount. Then I saw that it costs $70. As if the program itself wasn't expensive enough they want me to pay SEVENTY BUCKS for a plug-in? You gotta be crazy.

Hey, Ryan:
Just thought you might want to know about American Home Shield. Basically, they provide insurance on all the appliances in your home (and other things) for a very reasonable fee.
You pay a small monthly premium, but if anything breaks in your house, they'll fix or replace it for free.
I have several friends who swear by their services.
