For the first time since the 1970s, the Canadian dollar is equal to the American dollar. Similarly, the greenback hit a new record low against the euro this morning, two days after the feds made a surprise cut of 1/2% to prime lending rate. As someone who does a fair bit of work in Germany, Switzerland and BC, I can say that this sudden 'fluidity' (weakness?) in the greenback is starting to hurt. Has anyone else been impacted by this?

It may actually help my agency. My company is in Seattle, and we often get calls from Vancouver, BC, but the exchange rate always killed us. This might mean more business for us.

Not yet, though I do get paid in dollars (as opposed to my country's currency). I'll have to wait and see if the dollar retains its strength against the colón or not...

The weakness (though not "sudden" I think) of the dollar has been impacting us for years. We live in Germany, but we get paid in dollars. Right now what this means for me is that I'm paying over $2,000 rent per month for a 1,700 square foot (not all that nice) house, and the utility bills are outrageous. Going out to dinner just isn't worth it when the places we like to go cost us $100 for a family of four.

Yes, there are compensations, some monetary from the employer and some others not monetary in nature, but it still hurts. We didn't know how good we had it when we moved here in 1994, and even then, it wasn't like it was in the 80's for the Americans living overseas. Now THEY were livin' large.
