People say those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, it is true, however slavery is nothing that we should remind ourselves of.
Yes, as a race we have come a long way. Yes as a race we now have greater freedoms, however why do you think up and coming generations want to think about a time where people were racially intolerant, and constantly remind them of this when they're growing up in a society where interracial relationships abound as common place as say McDonalds?
I understand history plays a pivotal role in the development of a society, and that history was made, taken care of, and established during the civil rights movements when African-Americans fought the battles that I don't have to fight. I am thankful for this, no doubt about it, however what good does it do a man to think about the misfortunes of others that he does not have, when all he can do to help is not perpetuate the problem held by those not of his own?
Someone enlighten me: how can we overcome racism and social hatred if people like Al Sharpton, who are supposedly civil rights leaders pick and choose what battles they'll fight for, and which ones they'll turn a blind eye to?
I understand this is a hot button topic, but I trust that 9rules has the competence to treat it well.

1. Inter-racial relationships are NOT as common as McDonald's.
2. Slavery still exists, just not in the US.
3. Everyone chooses their battles. If you're concerned about injustice, you'll get worn out real fast by fighting ALL the battles that be. You have to be a little picky and fight the battles you can.

I honestly don't understand your question.
Is it related to the video or are you just
throwing in the fact that Sharpton picks
and chooses his battles?
Everyone has to
pick and choose when they are fighting
battles of social injustice, to fight them all
is impossible.
Slavery is something we should never
forget and in order to do that we must
remind ourselves it existed. The
remnants-results of slavery with no
reparation still exist in the inner cities with
more than exponentially increasing
devastation to certain segments of society over the last two hundred years.
I'm not sure where you're coming from with "I understand history plays a pivotal role in the development of a society, and that history was made, taken care of, and established during the civil rights movements when African-Americans fought the battles that I don't have to fight. I am thankful for this,"
I don't think it was "taken care of" but that is just my opinion. Also the opinion of the seven rather culturally diverse people here in my apartment right now, but maybe that's because they've been drinking too much...;)
People may be more racially "tolerant" but to me the word tolerant is an ugly word.
I tolerate people I do not like, I used to tolerate my brother's ignorant friends, I tolerate sitting at a dinner table full of meat when I don't eat it and the smell makes me sick.
Is being racially "tolerant" really good enough?
Sharpton sometimes irritates the crap out of me but I say more power to him, may be slap in in the faces of everyone every day if he feels he needs to and let him pick and choose his battles, we all have to do that.
